Man Accused Of Killing Ben Gumbi Says He Was A Bolt Driver And Paid R15K For ‘A Job’
The Rustenburg magistrate’s court heard on Monday the testimony of Sibongiseni Ngubane, the man accused of killing businessman Ben Gumbi. Ngubane claimed that he had been paid R15,000 to drive from Johannesburg to Rustenburg, where the murder took place.
According to Ngubane, he is a Bolt driver who typically uses a Toyota Yaris to transport passengers in Gauteng. On the day of the incident, he received a call from his friend Sibiya, asking him to transport people from Johannesburg to Rustenburg. Ngubane’s passengers provided him with a stolen blue VW Polo for the trip, which he later discovered had fake registration plates.
Upon reaching Rustenburg, the Polo was abandoned and the group switched to a Toyota Corolla Quest, driven by someone else, for the return journey to Johannesburg. When questioned about why he did not inquire about the change of cars, Ngubane stated that it had not occurred to him at the time.
Ngubane, who has a pending case of possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, as well as a cash-in-transit robbery charge, requested bail from the court.

He claimed that the crimes he had committed were unintentional and assured the court that he would not engage in criminal activities or possess a firearm if granted bail.
The court is expected to make a ruling on Ngubane’s bail application later this week.
