SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt says it is frustrating that he cannot sit on the bench during CAF competitions.
Hunt watched his side qualify for the Group stage of this season’s CAF Confederation Cup with a 3-0 defeat of Gaborone United in Polokwane from the stands on Friday night, winning the tie 3-1 on aggregate.
Hunt is not eligible to sit in the dugout as he needs a CAF A License or Pro License mandated by CAF. He currently holds a UEFA A License that may need to be converted to suit the African governing body.
The coach told the media after the match that not only is the situation disappointing it’s also ridiculous as he doesn’t understand what could have changed between the last time he sat on the bench in the Champions League and now.
“Very frustrating. I mean I sat on the bench for the last 25 years and all of a sudden I can’t sit on the bench,” said Hunt.
“I don’t know what CAF but ja so it’s disappointing but we’ll try and get the conversion done or whatever I have to get done November, so we’ll see.
“I don’t know why it’s changed. I mean I’ve got a UEFA A License. I have been sitting on the bench. I was in the semi-final, and quarter-final of the Champions League at Chiefs two years ago and all the years at Wits and SuperSport I sat on the bench, played all the games and group stages and it was never a problem.
“But something’s happened one association saying bugger you and the other one saying bugger you and I don’t know. That’s not my argument. That’s what’s happened I think.
“But I mean it’s ridiculous that I can’t be involved but I don’t know what’s going to happen. Can you sit on the bench with a CAF C License? I think my daughters have got CAF Cs. They’ve never kicked a ball in their life maybe they can sit on the bench (laughingly).”
