Cape Town City captain Thamsanqa Mkhize has explained how they are hoping to help striker Khanyisa Mayo get back to banging in goals.

City’s veteran captain was speaking to iDiski Times as the club prepares to host Cape Town Spurs in Saturday’s iKapa derby.

Mayo finished last season as a joint-top goalscorer with Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile on 12 goals in the league.

The former Richards Bay forward didn’t start the current season the way he would’ve wanted as he has just scored one goal so far in the campaign after seven league matches.

Mkhize mentioned that they need to get the best out of Mayo, also stating that a Mayo scoring goals will also help Bafana Bafana.

“I’m glad you’re noticing that, because whenever you write stuff from the media’s side it always gets to us as players so for us as his teammates as his brothers, we need to support him,” Mkhize told iDiski Times.

“We need to remind him what he has done last season and also we need to remind him that what you were doing last season do it more because is shows that what you were doing last season was helping you.

“It was helping go to score goals, so this season you’re a target because everybody saw that you played well last season and you scored so many goals so they gonna be alert whenever they defend against you so for us we need to uplift him to get him back to his confidence, make sure that he starts scoring for us, because we need Mayo who is gonna score.

“If he scores for us, it’s good for the national team as well. So we need to help Mayo to get back to his best.”

City host Cape Town Spurs in the iKapa Derby on Saturday afternoon (15h00).
