A prominent Cape Town lawyer was among those who died in a mass shooting in Gugulethu this week. Mbeko Venfolo, who served as the director of Venfolo Attorneys, was one of five individuals who lost their lives in a senseless mass shooting in Gugulethu earlier this week.
The Black Lawyers Association (BLA) in the Western Cape expressed their shock and disgust at the news of Venfolo’s death, as well as the recent loss of another lawyer, Ayanda Gladile, who also fell victim to gun violence. The BLA condemned the actions of these criminals, who show a complete disregard for human life.
According to reports, the shooting took place on Monday evening in KTC, when armed men in a separate vehicle opened fire on Venfolo and his friends, who were sitting in two other vehicles. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, and no arrests have been made at this time.
This tragic incident is yet another example of the rampant crime that plagues our communities in South Africa. The BLA emphasizes that the level of criminality in the country is alarming and demands immediate attention from all stakeholders. They call for intervention from law enforcement agencies, an interministerial task force, civil society, and the religious community.
