Sundowns Break Chiefs Record After Stellies Win

Mamelodi Sundowns have made it a record 32 DStv Premiership matches unbeaten after their comeback 3-1 win over Stellenbosch at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.

On a miserable, cold evening in the nation’s capital, Tshwane, the game began 35 minutes late due to the heavy rainfall.

And while it appeared that the lost side to inflict defeat to Sundowns would spring a surprise, the reigning champions showed their pedigree once more.

Devin Titus opened the scoring just before the 15-minute mark after Riyaad Pieterse’s save fell to the feet of the speedy winger.

However, Grant Kekana and Aubrey Modiba turned the game on it’s head in the space of five minutes as the defender netted from an acute angle, before Modiba’s stunning free-kick beat Sage Stephens with a fierce effort into the top corner.

Siyabonga Mabena netted his first professional goal at the age of 16 in the 90th minute after being unselfishly set up by Peter Shalulile for a tap-in to add gloss to the scoreline.

The win made it eight in a row to kick off the 2023/24 season and extended their unbeaten league run to a record 32 games, overtaking the milestone previously held by Amakhosi.
