Golden Arrows have officially confirmed the departure of co-head coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi, who resigned on Sunday.
Vilakazi stunned the football family when he told this publication that he had left the club on Sunday, despite Arrows lying second in the DStv Premiership table.
According to iDiski Times sources, Vilakazi was allegedly looking for an improved contract having done so well with the team this season and there was also some other personal issues.
On Monday, the club released a very brief statement, confirming “Lamontville Golden Arrows accepts coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi’s resignation” without giving any further details.
Vilakazi, who spent 20 years at the club – from being a player to being the communications manager and leading the club two DStv Diski Challenge titles, was appointed as the club’s co-coach at the start of last season alongside Mabhuti Khenyeza.
This after Lehlohonolo Seema was sacked in April last year after Arrows were demolished 6-0 by all conquering Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Stadium.
He and Khenyeza were appointed as caretaker coaches to finish the last batch of matches in the 2021/22 season before assuming the permanent post.
It was not the greatest of starts for them last term, failing to win in the first four matches which piled a pressure on them to be first in line to be shown the door. But the team improved and ended up finishing ninth last term.
Despite a horrible start last term, it was not the case this season as they have punched above their weight having signed many free agent players, winning three matches of the five matches, including the last two games, to lie second in the DStv Premiership table with 10 points, eight behind leaders Sundowns.
Sundowns is also the club that crushed Arrows 4-0 this season which is the only loss they have so far. Arrows, post the FIFA break, will face Stellenbosch FC at Mpumalanga Stadium on 16 September.
