Vusimuzi Vilakazi has confirmed that he has left his job as a coach of the DStv Premiership side Golden Arrows.
‘Kanu’, as he’s well-known in football circles, has been serving as a co-coach along with Mabhuti Khenyeza since June 2022. They were first appointed as interim coaches following the sacking of Lehlohonolo Seema in April 2022.
Vilakazi ended a 20-year stay at the club having started as a player in the early 2000s. He took a career break as a player in 2010 to take up the Communications Manager role.
He then came out of retirement in 2014, continuing where he left as a striker at Abafana Bes’thende before he hung his boots again.
VUSIMUZI VILAKAZI PARTS WAYS WITH GOLDEN ARROWS
Vilakazi announced his shock departure from Arrows on his social media platform. However, the post was later deleted. He also confirmed to SABC Sport that he had “vacated” his position.
The public broadcaster wrote: “Vusimuzi Vilakazi has confirmed to SABC Sport that he has vacated his post as co-coach of Golden Arrows, who currently occupy second spot on the DStv Prem table.”
WINNING MULTICHOICE DISKI CHALLENGE TROPHY
Just after retiring as a player, Vilakazi got an opportunity to spearhead the reserve side of Arrows. In his first season in charge, he guided his charges to MDC honours in the 2014/15 season.
His journey with the senior team started in 2021 when he was appointed to assist Seema.
The former striker came close to helping Arrows finish within the top eight in the previous season. The Durban-based side ended the 2022/23 campaign in ninth position having accumulated 38 points in 30 games.
Arrows also started this season on a high as they currently sit second after the champions Mamelodi Sundowns. They have collected 10 points in five games.
The Durban outfit has picked three wins so far against SuperSport United, Polokwane City and their provincial rivals Richards Bay FC. They have suffered just one loss where they were terribly hammered 4-0 by the defending champions Sundowns.
Meanwhile, their league opener against Moroka Swallows ended in a 1-1 drew one against Moroka Swallows.
