The SADC is an inter-governmental organization and was formed in 1980, as an alliance of nine states, or countries in Southern Africa. The main aim of this organization is to organize and conduct development projects throughout South Africa to minimize the dependence on the economy.





It came into existence in Zambia on 1st April 1980 when the Lusaka Declaration, was adopted. There are a lot of state members today, around 16, which are a part of this community including Zimbabwe, Angola, Lesotho, Swaziland, Comoros, Congo, Madagascar etc.

The main aim of this organization is to eradicate poverty through peace, security and regional integration. SADC has its headquarters in Gaborone.

SADC Annual Scholarships 2022

This year, SADC has launched its scholarship program to facilitate graduates. These scholarships will fund students interested in post-doctoral studies, masters, research programmes, and doctoral. The purpose of providing these scholarships is to honour the founders of SADC and increase awareness of South Africa’s history, cooperation, liberation and integration amongst citizens and to make them realize the importance of their contributions to the SADC. SADC is currently offering 5 scholarships annually. These include 2 scholarships for doctoral-level and 3 scholarships for research at master’s level. Each of these scholarships can be up to USD 20,000. These will include your housing, travelling, tuition fees, health insurance and a monthly allowance of USD 1,000.00 (R15 433.50) for living expenses.

Who should apply?

To apply, the candidate must hold a graduate degree from a reputable university in some relevant field of study in which he is applying.

  • The applicant must be a citizen of a state member of SADC
  • Applicants must return to his/her country once his/her studies have been completed.
  • The candidates must have a master’s degree in a relevant subject that will enable him/her to enter into doctoral and post-doctoral research.
  • The maximum age limit for male candidates applying for the master’s programme is 30 years while for female candidates it is 35 years.
  • For candidates applying for doctoral programmes, the maximum age for male candidates is 35 years whereas for female candidates it is 40 years.
  • It should be noted that SADC secretariate staff and their families are not allowed to apply for this scholarship.
  • The fields of study are mainly based on social sciences and include topics such as democracy, regional political and economic integration, development and peace etc.

How do I apply?

To list yourself for this scholarship, you have to submit your applications through SADC Contact National Points at the State Members level. You can apply through the link here.



Applicants also need to submit some mandatory documents that are also required for the application process. The documents required are:

  • Your academic transcripts and certifications (certified copies)
  • Your national ID or passport that indicates your citizenship (Certified copies)
  • Recently taken passport size pictures (coloured)
  • Detailed and in-depth CV with contacts and names of three referees.
  • Photocopy of admission letter from a reputable and recognized university in the region of SADC
  • 2 Reference letters containing contact details.
  • An essay. The essay should not be more than 500 words and must explain why you have chosen a particular field and what is its importance to the memories of the SADC founders.
