Stellenbosch FC knocked out SuperSport United from MTN8 after defeating Gavin Hunt’s men thanks to a goal in extra-time.

The two teams could not be separated in regulated time of their MTN8 quarter-final at the Peter Mokaba stadium on Sunday evening, but Andre De Jong scored the winner in extra-time.

The first half produced few real chances for both sides with Stellies getting a clear shot in the 33rd minute when Kgaogelo Sekgota found Devin Titus but the latter headed into the Washington Arubi’s hands.

Three minutes later is was the hosts’ chance through a Shandre Campbell corner kick.  The shot was too high for Tyson Hlatswayo and Kegan Johannes. The match went into the break locked at nil all.

Both sides made no changes when the second half started and it took six minutes for Stellies to get a free-kick that Fawaaz Basidien kicked into the keeper’s hands. Ronald Pfumbidzai had a perfect opportunity to put United ahead in the 53rd minute with a powerful shot which Sage Stephens saved.

There was a penalty shout from Matsatsantsa in the 56th minute when it looked like a Stellies player handled the ball in the box. Terrence Dzvukamanja could have had the opener in the 59th minute but was off target.

With United enjoying possession Campbell almost sneaked one in from a tight corner but the keeper was on alert in the 63rd minute. Iqraam Rayners had chance to make it 1-0 for the Maroons but his shot was blocked by Ime Okon.

There was a last attempt from Grant Margeman but his shot went over the posts leaving the match 0-0 at Full time and forcing extra-time.

It was De Jong, who scored the much-celebrated winner, after finding himself on the end of a Fawaaz Basadien corner and heading the ball into the back of the net in the 100th minute.

The draw for the semi-finals will take place shortly after the final whistle. Follow iDiski Times’ channels for all updates.
