- Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi told the Madlanga Commission that Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala was given blue-light vehicles by law enforcement officials.
- He accused MPs Fadiel Adams and Dianne Kohler Barnard of interfering with intelligence operations and making reckless claims.
- Both MPs have denied the allegations and will respond when the Commission resumes.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has told the Madlanga Commission that controversial tenderpreneur Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala once had vehicles fitted with blue lights, supplied by law enforcement officials in the City of Ekurhuleni.
Testifying on day two of the inquiry on Thursday, Mkhwanazi alleged that tender kingpins like Matlala received protection from certain state role-players, with the matter initially flagged by the now-suspended chief of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police.
The Madlanga Commission, established by President Cyril Ramaphosa, is probing allegations of criminality, political interference, and corruption within the country’s law enforcement and intelligence structures.
Mkhwanazi also accused members of parliament of interfering with intelligence operations in Gauteng. He singled out Fadiel Adams of the National Coloured Congress and the DA’s Dianne Kohler Barnard.
According to him, Adams used classified information recklessly and laid unsubstantiated criminal complaints against the Crime Intelligence Unit, while Kohler Barnard made claims about the misuse of its funds.
He further linked these disputes to General Dumisani Khumalo, head of the Crime Intelligence Unit, who is facing fraud charges over an alleged unlawful appointment.
The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, which probed Khumalo’s matter, was also accused by Mkhwanazi of breaking the law.
Both Adams and Kohler Barnard have denied the allegations and are expected to respond during the next phase of the Commission’s hearings.
