AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu has confirmed that Ramahlwe Mphahlele will remain with the side in this coming season.
“Ramahlwe Mphahlele has extended his stay with the club,” said Zungu during the arrival of new coach Pablo Franco Martin.
The news come as the latest twist in Mphahlele’s time at the club and after he seemingly already had a foot of the door under Romain Folz.
Mphahlele, along with Keagan Buchanan and Lehlohonolo Majoro was told by Folz that he doesn’t need them and they will leave at the end of 2022/23 season.
As they were told their services are no longer needed and their contracts won’t be renewed, they left the camp early in April.
But when Ayanda Dlamini took over as caretaker coach and Folz redeployed as the president’s advisor, Dlamini recalled all three of them.
Mphahlele scored in the 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, the only victory under Dlamini, and also the 2-2 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns in KwaMashu.
He was even named as captain, as Veli Mothwa was out injured and the former Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns captain maintained the armband until the completion of the season.
iDiski Times was then informed that Usuthu were set to make a u-turn about Mphahlele based on his performances in those matches after being given a second chance.
While Buchanan and Majoro saw their contracts not renewed, Mphahlele was informed that he will be kept for next season under the leadership of new coach.
Mphahlele, 33, who arrived after the season had started, featured in 27 matches in all competitions last season, scoring three goals.
The first of his three goals came against his former club Chiefs, as they crushed the Soweto giants 4-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in January, the first time Usuthu beat Amakhosi in a league match in Durban in the new millennium, equating 24 years.
