Meet Ntando Makhubela, a young man from Nelspruit, who defied the odds and transformed his life from working as a petrol attendant to becoming a medical doctor.

Despite facing challenges and financial struggles, Ntando’s passion for medicine and the support he received propelled him on an extraordinary journey.

Overcoming Challenges:

Growing up in a tough environment, Ntando always dreamed of becoming a doctor.

Although he initially didn’t get accepted into medical school after finishing high school, he didn’t give up.

Due to financial constraints, he had to find a job, and that’s when he started working as a petrol attendant at Engen Flamboyant garage in Rocky’s Drift.

One day, someone from the ANC Youth League noticed Ntando’s potential and was disappointed to see him in his current job.

They spoke to him and introduced him to the Cuban program, which offered scholarships for studying medicine.

Ntando saw this as an opportunity and applied.

Eventually, he received a scholarship to study medicine in Cuba.

A Blessing in Disguise:

Ntando is grateful for the unwavering support he received from his family throughout his journey.

Being the oldest among his siblings, he felt a responsibility to set a good example.

His time in Cuba not only provided him with a quality education but also made him appreciate the opportunities available to young people in South Africa who come from marginalized backgrounds.

Ntando’s aspirations go beyond his personal success.

He wants to promote primary health care and prioritize the well-being of communities, especially those in underserved rural areas.

Through health education and development initiatives, he aims to raise awareness about the connection between lifestyle choices and good health.

Inspiring the Youth:

As Youth Month concludes in South Africa, Ntando’s story serves as a beacon of hope for those facing difficult circumstances.

Recognizing the challenges that today’s youth encounter, such as high unemployment rates, substance abuse, and increasing dropout numbers, he encourages them to persevere and reminds them that it’s never too late to pursue their dreams.

In a final message to matriculants and those facing adversity, Ntando emphasizes the importance of giving their best and achieving good results.

He urges them not to limit themselves and to actively pursue their dreams.

With determination and perseverance, he believes that anything is possible.
