- The Patriotic Alliance has named its deputy president, Kenny Kunene, as its mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, despite his ongoing suspension.
- Kunene’s suspension follows an internal investigation into his alleged association with a suspected crime underworld figure.
- PA leader Gayton McKenzie insists on Kunene’s candidacy, pending the conclusion of the party’s internal probe.
The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has announced that its deputy president, Kenny Kunene, will be the party’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, despite Kunene currently being suspended pending an investigation into his alleged links to a suspected crime underworld figure.
PA leader Gayton McKenzie made the announcement during a Facebook live broadcast last night, confirming the party’s internal probe into Kunene’s conduct is nearing its conclusion.
“The investigation of the DP will probably be done, Eugene will tell us tomorrow when the investigation will be done,” McKenzie stated.
Kunene’s suspension stems from his suspected ties to Katiso “KT” Molefe, an alleged figure in the criminal underworld. Kunene was reportedly found at Molefe’s Sandton home when police arrived to arrest Molefe for the murder of Oupa Sefoka, widely known as DJ Sumbody.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, McKenzie praised Kunene’s work in the City of Johannesburg and expressed the party’s desire for the investigation to be completed swiftly.
“He has done very good work in the City of Joburg, and the DP will be our mayoral candidate for Joburg. We insist on that as he was a councillor,” McKenzie added.
“We will discuss with him that position, but the DP, we want his case to finish.”
