Broos Explains Msimango Snub, Questions PSL & Clubs

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has explained his omission of Given Msimango and questioned the PSL and clubs for not releasing players for the COSAFA Cup tournament.

Msimango, 26, was one of the standout defenders in the DStv Premiership this past season in the second best defensive team behind Mamelodi Sundowns, as TS Galaxy only conceded 22 goals in the 30 games – with him featuring in every minute of this past season and his fine performance earning him a move to Kaizer Chiefs, which is yet to be announced.

But Broos says he went for continuity in his final 23-man Bafana squad as the likes of PSL Defender of the Season Khuliso Mudau didn’t displace his previous selection that qualified the nation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in their double-header against Liberia.

“I’m very happy [with the defence] and I think the same defenders of the game against Liberia, so that means that I trust them and have confidence in them, and they did a good job, certainly against Libeeria it was not easy for them, but they did a good job,” Broos said after naming the 23-man squad on SABC1.

“So why should I change? Yes, we spoke about De Reuck for example but yes I don’t know what’s happened to him at Sundowns, he’s not playing [regularly] anymore, okay, and maybe some others but when I said already, not 23 but 30 players, maybe 35 and I can choose – and that won’t change much in the next months.

“This is what I wanted, to have a pool and then just fish on what to take, and the guys who also come, knows how we work, what I like, what I ask from them, so it’s easy to work.”

When asked directly about the defender set to join Chiefs in the coming season, he hinted he doesn’t have the required experience yet for the challenge of the Atlas Lions, who went all the way to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

But it led him to mention several other emerging talents close to national team selection and why they are not able to join up for the regional competition of COSAFA, to build the experience playing for the national team.

“I know [Msimango], we noted him, same like Margeman at SuperSport. Again, I hope for him he plays all the games at [Kaizer Chiefs], this is important for them, this is also a pity we can’t work with these guys. If I see now, we wanted to call them for COSAFA, but the league told us we don’t release the players because it’s not a FIFA window,” Broos added.

“This is a pity because maybe they not ready to come with us [to face Morocco] but if they should play a tournament like that with international experience, it would be good for them but yeah – it’s not possible.

“We playing Morocco, can you take the risk to take someone like [Msimango] in the team? And then this guy is maybe not ready for it and then his career for Bafana is finished because they will say ‘oh look against Morocco it was a disaster’. So you have to bring the guys when they are ready.

“So it’s a pity, guys like Margeman [too], Kenan Phillips, Keagan Johannes, a lot of younger players who have to play – that’s why [COSAFA] would be interesting to let them play in such a tournament but clubs don’t release them outside FIFA windows. Come on. We are talking about South African football.”
