Five children dead, 11 injured in KZN crèche taxi crash

A tragic accident in Imbali, KwaZulu-Natal, saw a taxi crash into a crèche, leaving five children dead and several others injured.
The driver reportedly lost control after the vehicle’s brakes failed on a winding road, with the victims all believed to have been passengers in the taxi.
The driver is in police custody, and government officials have offered condolences to the affected families.

At least five children have been killed and eleven others injured after a taxi crashed into a crèche in Imbali, KwaZulu-Natal. The incident, which occurred on Thursday morning, has left three of the injured children in a critical condition.

The taxi driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle after its brakes allegedly failed on a winding road, causing it to veer off and crash into the building. The deceased and injured children were inside the taxi at the time of the collision.

Police have since taken the driver in for questioning. Paramedics from a private ambulance service were dispatched to the scene, where they confirmed the three fatalities.

“Sadly, it has been confirmed that three patients have been declared deceased on the scene,” stated Craig Botha, a spokesperson for the ambulance service.

Siboniso Duma, the KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, expressed his condolences, stating,

“Our hearts are with the parents of the affected children.” He has dispatched a team to the accident scene and to support the families.
