WESTERN CAPE WEATHER WARNING

The warning is valid from 3 until 4 June. “Two cold fronts are expected over the weekend,” said the weather service.

Wave heights of between 3.5 and 4.5 metres – Northwesterly to westerly swells – are expected between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas on Saturday, 3 June, spreading to Hondeklip Bay and Plettenberg Bay by the afternoon.

Waves could reach up to five metres at times on Saturday.

“These conditions are expected to persist into Sunday while subsiding north of Cape Columbine. The sea state will continue to very rough and choppy seas that may lead to difficulty in navigation for small vessels and localised disruptions at ports,” said the weather service.

The potential impact of the waves includes:

  • Localised disruption of small harbours or ports.
  • Localised damage to coastal infrastructure.
  • Beachfront activities may be disrupted.
  • The risk of being swept off coastal rocks due to infrequent large waves.
  • Dragging of anchors is possible near Cape Point on Thursday night.
