Five former Kaizer Chiefs players have been named in the Nedbank Cup All-star team alongside three former Buccaneers players, while Themba Zwane, Peter Shalulile and Bradley Grobler also made the selection.
Mosimane, who won the Nedbank Cup twice when he was with Mamelodi Sundowns, was picked as coach of the All Star team, which was voted for by fans.
Itumeleng Khune, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Teko Modise, Themba Zwane and Happy Jele lead the Nedbank Cup All Star Team chosen by the fans.
In addition, Siboniso Gaxa, Erick Mathoho, Tsepo Masilela and Sifiso Myeni also made the selection. As did the two hitmen up top – Peter Shalulile, who scored the winner when Sundowns won this cup last season, is paired with Bradley Grobler.
All these players have great history in the cup, with Khune and Shabalala lifting the Ke Yona trophy with Chiefs in the 2012/13 season, the year Khune was named the PSL Footballer of the Year under Stuart Baxter.
Mathoho, who just left Chiefs, was part of that side in defence alongside Gaxa and Masilela, starring as Bernard Parker scored a blinding goal to catch Ronwen Williams from range in the final in Durban. That was the last time Chiefs won this cup.
Jele won this cup twice with Pirates – in the 2010/11 season and also in the 2013/14 season, with Myeni, in the latter match, scoring the first goal before Kermit Erasmus scored twice to see Pirates beat Gavin Hunt’s Bidvest Wits 3-1 in Durban. Myeni also won this cup with Roger de Sa’s Bidvest Wits when they beat AmaZulu in the 2010.
Modise and Zwane won it together when Sundowns beat Ajax Cape Town on penalties at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the 2014/15 season, the first knockout trophy won by Mosimane with the Tshwane giants.
Zwane has since added two more of the Ke Yona Cups, in the 2019/20 season in what was the last campaign from Mosimane before he departed when Sundowns beat Bloemfontein Celtic at Orlando Stadium.
The other was last season when Shalulile was the best player in the PSL, riffling a left-footed shot against Marumo Gallants, as Sundowns scored a second treble.
Grobler has also done well in this cup, scoring in the 2015/16 season for SuperSport against Pirates in the final in Polokwane as they won 3-2.
These two sides met yet again in the final in the following season and the veteran striker, who has seen his contract renewed by SuperSport, scored twice as Tshwane giants crushed Pirates 4-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
