SuperSport Confirm Interest In Chiefs Outcast

SuperSport United have confirmed interest in Kaizer Chiefs outcast Phathutshedzo Nange as Gavin Hunt looks to reunite with another of his former players.

The midfielder has featured in just 142 minutes of first-team football under head coach Arthur Zwane and looks set to leave on a free transfer.

But it appears he won’t be clubless for long with Hunt keen on his services and Matthews outright confirming their interest, but it will have to come at a potential wage cut for the 31-year-old who won the DStv Premiership under Hunt during their time together at Bidvest Wits.

“Yes [we’re interested], but I need to know that he is free because sometimes he is free and sometimes he is not free, so if Nange is a player that is free and we can agree terms with him, he’s definitely someone who’s interesting to us,” Matthews confirmed.

“Gavin has worked with him, he likes him [but] I can’t pay him anywhere near his current package, him and his agent are aware – and I gave them a couple of weeks to give it some thought.

“I’ve given them a couple of weeks to give it some thought on what the levels will be but I believe Chiefs may still have an option of extending him – so it’s not something we’ve taken too far, because if they keep him, we’re not in a position to buy him.

“And we’re not in a position to trade players for him either, so if he’s free and we can reach terms, we’ll be very interested in adding him to the squad, whether we keep [Grant] Margeman or [Siphisihle] Ndlovu or not.”

Meanwhile, Hunt was more coy about the interest in the experienced midfielder.

“You know how many players are available… are they good enough? So yeah obviously, all those players I had [in the past], look how well they are doing in the leagues, even the ones who left here before I came back,” he said.

“So there’s a lot of players that are available, I know what I need but I can’t have everything can I?”

Nange scored four goals and registered four assists in 34 games in his season under Hunt at the Students back in the 2019/20 season.
