Ex-Kaizer Chiefs defender David Kannemeyer has given an honest admission about the club’s current squad following the conclusion of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season.
Chiefs is one of the most supported teams in South Africa. However, they were in everyone’s mouths for all wrong reasons week in, week out throughout the entire season.
The Soweto giants blew hot and cold in their performances as they struggled for consistency.
In 30 league matches they registered 13 victories, five draws and suffered 12 defeats. In the MTN8 and the Nedbank Cup they were booted of the competitions in the semi-finals respectively.
DAVID KANNEMEYER SAYS KAIZER CHIEFS LACK QUALITY PLAYERS
According to the ex-defender, Amakhosi don’t to need to change the coach. But they lack quality players that will bring glory days back to Naturena.
“The fact is there are no quality players at the moment. I think the playing staff is not good enough that’s all reality,” Kannemeyer told FARPost.
“When people [fans] are looking at the players what are the players doing?
“It can’t be the coaches; Gavin Hunt was there, Stuart Baxter and Ernst Middendorp were there before.
“You can bring another coach, he will fail because there is no quality. Clearly you can’t fire three coaches in a space of a year and a half and say the coach is the problem.
HOW KAIZER CHIEFS SHOULD SOLVE THEIR PROBLEM?
Kannemeyer suggests that the management should re-look the whole squad, make a decision on who to keep, let go and bring in.
“They [management] need to re-look at the whole squad and see what can they bring in to make the team better,” he added.
Chiefs finished the campaign in the fifth position following a 1-0 defeat to Cape Town City on Saturday 13 May.
They amassed 44 points, three points lower than they got last season.
