DStv CEO Marc Jury has confirmed that Mamelodi Sundowns will keep the DStv Premiership trophy and the PSL’s main sponsorship will have a new trophy next season.
This was confirmed by Jury in the post match interview with SuperSport TV after Sundowns drew 1-1 with Maritzburg United at Loftus Stadium on Tuesday night to lift up the trophy.
It was a third DStv Premiership title for Sundowns since the paying channel became the main sponsored of the Premier Soccer League in 2020, replacing ABSA.
Whether DStv will come up with a new trophy design next campaign, still has to be confirmed.
Sundowns scored first through Surprise Ralani, who clipped the ball over Renaldo Leaner in the 24th minute.
That meant Sundowns were on course of record breaking points of 72, but they failed to hold onto their lead.
They were left exposed to at the back, with Rowan Human breaking in the middle, releasing Tumelo Njoti on the left, who set up Ali Meza, former Sundowns player, to slot into the empty at the back post.
Sundowns, who have won the league title 14 times and the last seven in a row, became the second club this season that will keep a domestic trophy, after MTN decided that Orlando Pirates will also keep the Wafa Wafa cup after beating AmaZulu in the final in November last year.
That is because the Soweto giants have won the MTN8 trophy four times under the telecommunication company, which is more than anyone. MTN8 representative confirmed that they will have a new trophy design next year.
