Khune Opens Up On Chiefs Future

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has insisted the decision about his future lies in the hands of the club, but he’s not ready to retire yet.

The Amakhosi captain made his return to the field of play in the recent 2-1 defeat to Swallows FC after Brandon Petersen had been suspended for the match.

However, despite a good display against the Dube Birds, Khune didn’t keep his starting spot in the Soweto Derby defeat in the Nedbank Cup.

The 35-year-old, who only ever played for Chiefs, has been one of the main talking points among supporters right with his contract coming to an end at the of June.

“What’s more important is what I offer on a daily basis on and off the field and the club will reward me based on that,” Khune told Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports Worldwide.

“So if the club feels like ‘no, Itu we’ve had enough or thank you for your services’, then if we have to part ways we will. That will be the club’s decision.

“But if the club says ‘Itu, we would like to keep you but in a different position’, I will still gladly appreciate what the club has done for me.

“So if I have to go coach, I will sit down with my wife, discuss and see if I still have it in my legs. So there’s a lot that we are going to discuss.”

When he was asked, if he would take the coaching job if the club offers him Khune didn’t hesitate in saying he still wants to play and that he is not ready to retire or coach.

“No, No I’m not ready to retire, I’m not ready to,” he added

With his contract set to expire, the 2012/23 PSL Footballer of the Year stated that no negotiations have taken place yet, as he is only focusing on finishing the season on a high.

“Right now we haven’t started negotiations. What’s more important is to finish the season on the high, that’s my main focus,” he concluded.
