Downs star hands Spurs advantage in title race

A last-gasp strike by on-loan Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Luvuyo Phewa handed Cape Town Spurs the advantage in the Motsepe Foundation title race as they beat NB La Masia 2-1 at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday.

Spurs had gotten their goal through Ashley Cupido from the spot midway through the second half.

La Masia pulled one back from the spot with just about eight minutes to go. 

With the match seemingly headed for a stalemate, Phewa unleashed a thunderbolt to give Spurs a win.

The result means Spurs are top with one game to go. This comes after Casric Stars played a 1-1 draw against Venda Academy.

With one game to go, Spurs lead with 56 points as they host Tuks on the final day.

Casric are in second place with 55 points, while Polokwane City, who beat Platinum City Rovers 2-0, are on 54 points.

La Masia coach Ashwin Sutton said he was disappointed by the result after conceding the late goal.

“Well done to Cape Town Spurs. A bit disappointed in the result, a draw would have been a fair result.

“In this game, if you don’t take your chances, it becomes difficult. They were patient and waited for the right moment,” Sutton said.

Spurs coach Shaun Bartlett said, “the whole week, we’ve been asking Phewa to hit the target”.

He called on his charges to get a win in their last game of the season when they take on Tuks in Cape Town 

“We’ve gotta make sure we get a win in the last game.”
