Lionel Messi has apologised to the club and fans over his unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia.

The trip led to Argentina captain being suspended by his club Paris Saint-Germain earlier this week after he failed to turn up for training.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner travelled to Saudi Arabia without the club’s permission this week.

A day before, PSG suffered a 3-1 defeat against Lorient which was the last game Messi played.

In a video that was posted on his Instagram, Messi explained why he had to take the trip to the Middle East.

“I want to apologise obviously to my teammates and to the club,” the World Cup winner said in the video on Friday.

“I honestly thought we were going to have the day off after the match as had happened in the previous weeks. I had organised this trip to Saudi Arabia having cancelled it previously. This time I couldn’t cancel it. I am sorry for what I did and I wait to see what the club decides to do.”

Various reports suggest that Messi was banned from playing or training with the team and the club will not pay his wages during the suspension.

If the reports are true, the Argentine maestro will miss the Ligue 1 matches against Troyes and Ajaccio but could return against Auxerre on 21 May.

PSG are top of the standings with 75 points and are five points ahead of second-placed Marseille with four matches to go.

PSG coach Christophe Galtier reportedly said that it wasn’t his decision to suspend Messi but the club as a whole took a decision.

“We will see when Leo comes back. We will see what happens. Obviously there will be discussions with the club as a whole but also with Leo because this concerns him first and foremost,” Galtier said.
