Maart – The Difference Between Chiefs & Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Yusuf Maart, who’ve come through Orlando Pirates’ youth ranks, discussed the differences between his current and former clubs ahead of the this weekend’s Soweto Derby.

Maart recently captained Amakhosi in the absence of Keagan Dolly and Itumeleng Khune on the bench in the 1-0 win over Chippa United.

The achievement of wearing the armband for one of the biggest clubs in the country saw Maart come somewhat full circle after coming through the youth ranks of Chiefs’ Soweto rivals.

Ahead of Saturday’s Soweto Derby, Maart was asked about the differences between Amakhosi and the Sea Robbers.

“I think there is no huge difference,” he responded.

“The only difference is the supporters and fans. Is the most-different… Chiefs have a lot of supporters, Pirates also have a lot but I think 90% it’s Chiefs.

“To win this game, also in the derby now… To make it three in a row [this season], I think it’s something great for the team.

“And it’s a semi-final, so obviously we need to focus on what we need to do and we need to go according to plan what the coach wants.

“So whatever the coach says, we need to do, we need to go out there and do our hard work. We just need to go there and get the three points and got to the final.”

Maart made two senior appearances for Pirates but left in 2020 when the Buccaneers opted against offering him a new deal.

He then joined Sekhukhune United, where impressed and even got called up to Bafana Bafana before, after two years, Chiefs came knocking for his services ahead of the 2022/23 season.
