Has There Been Improvement At Chiefs? Zwane Responds

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has insisted there has been “a lot of improvement” at Amakhosi in 2022/23 despite the club likely falling short of CAF Champions League qualification.
Zwane is in his first season as head coach of the senior team after initially taking over as interim coach when Stuart Baxter was fired last campaign.
Despite coming close to second place, it seems Chiefs’ chances of finishing in the CAFCL spot have slipped away after recent defeat to Sekhukhune United and Chippa United and a win by Orlando Pirates on Wednesday, who are currently five points ahead, would mean Chiefs’ CAFCL race is run.
However, they could still overtake SuperSport United in third spot, should they make up a four-point gap in the last two DStv Premiership, with both sides still facing each other.
On the weekend, though, Zwane and Chiefs switch focus to the Nedbank Cup, where they will face Soweto rivals Pirates in the semi-final.
With just two games left in the competition Zwane and his men could potentially end the club’s near eight-year trophy draught and the Chiefs coach believes there has been progress in 2022/23, in particular around the young players.
“For me, there has been a lot of improvement in the squad, more especially the young players and the new players in the set-up,” he said.
“We always knew it was going to be a bit of a challenge to strike a balance but I think these players have done fairly well, overall.
“They have given their best all the time and yes, we feel we deserved to win some of the games that we didn’t win, but we learned from them and we have to move on.
“Now we have to think of the next game. There is still a lot to play for. You never know what’s going to happen, because that’s football. It’s unpredictable.”
