Sekhukhune United head coach Brandon Truter says completing the double over Kaizer Chiefs in the league this season is more about his side’s progress than it is about upsetting the opponent.
Truter’s charges were on target in the 1-0 victory against Amakhosi in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon and completed a double, having already defeated Chiefs on their 53rd birthday in Soweto in January.
Babina Noko now find themselves in sixth position on the DStv Premiership log, tied on 35 points with Cape Town City above them, with just four league matches left to play. Truter was pleased with the performance and happy that the jigsaw is finally coming together for his squad.
“It’s not so much about Chiefs. I think it’s about us and the progress we are making. It’s about the puzzle that is coming nicely together,” Truter said after the match when asked about the double of Chiefs.
“Of course there is always room for improvement but it’s another clean sheet for the defense. I’m happy that we are scoring at this moment. 1-0 at this stage can win us the game.
“We have proven that in the cup, we have proven that now in the league as well. For us it’s about progress.
“I think the biggest competition is within the camp – player to player. The mind-set as well, I have to give credit to the boys. At this stage of the season we are thinking about holidays, we are thinking about off-season and getting to the end. But the boys have been marvellous, they are staying focused at the moment.
“We’ve got so much to play for in terms of the top eight, in terms of the Nedbank Cup. So for us it’s about getting ready for the next test, which is next week.”
Truter, though, also admitted that the traveling throughout the campaign is taking a toll on his players.
“But at the same time within the squad there is a concern from the technical team, myself included in terms of the amount of fatigue.
“The next week is going to be hectic. We have AmaZulu, then mid-week Galaxy and then we have the cup game against Stellies in Cape Town. So it’s going to be absolutely hectic for us.”
Truter also admitted that mentally Sunday’s match was a tough game for him after his daughter was involved in an accident in Cape Town on Saturday. He will now travel to the mother city to be with his daughter and we wish her a speedy recovery.
