AmaZulu have released an official statement on George Maluleka after he collapsed on the pitch and needed immediate medical attention.

Maluleka, 34, broke down motionless in injury-time of his side’s 1-0 defeat to Swallows at NMoses Mabhida Stadium, with a defibrillator rushed onto the pitch.

Thanks to the quick response from medical teams from both clubs after he was stabilised, was breathing and moving when an ambulance took him off the field.

While it was initially thought Maluleka would be transported to a hospital, he stayed at the venue and more tests were conducted, as confirmed by the club on Sunday morning.

“Thanks for your kind messages towards George Maluleke who required immediate medical attention right before the match against Swallows was about to end at Moses Mabhida,” the club stated.

“Mido was discharged after a number of tests were conducted by our medics.”

It is the second time this season after Maluleka already collapsed during AmaZulu’s DStv Premiership clash with Sekhukhune United on 1 January.

Back then, he even continued to play after being attended to for several minutes, but his second collapse is a worrying factor.

“It is usual the heart situation and I will have to check if there is a tricky side on the results,” AmaZulu coach Romain Folz told iDiski Times after Saturday’s game.

“Yes, this is a second time as you said in the spell of six months, so we need, one; to be cautious. Two; we need to check what is exactly happening because it is happening quite often with footballers – you saw what happened to Richards Bay player [Siphamandla Mtolo]. So let’s protect the man first.”
