It was a nightmare day for many PSL players as they were representing their countries in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match-day three on Saturday.

Mozambique, where Elias Pelembe led them from the front as the skipper, saw his country crushed 5-1 by African champions Senegal in the Group L match at Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio.

Four goals came in the first half for the Teranga Lions, with star man Sadio Mane one of the scorers, side-footing the second goal from Youssouf Sabaly’s picked out pass.

This after Sabaly scored his first goal for his country in the ninth minute.

Iliman Ndiaye added the third in the 32nd minute before Boulaye Dia scored the fourth in the 39th minute.

However, the Mambas pulled one back through Gild Vilanculos just after the second half had started. The African champions, who took their foot off the accelerator, scored the fifth late on through Habibou Diallo, to maintain their perfect start in these qualifiers.

Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove only came on in the second half for the Mambas.

In Egypt, Mohamed Salah helped the North African side beat Gabadinho Mhango’s Malawi 2-0 in Group D match in Cairo. Salah roared the Pharaohs in front, side-footing the African finalists in the 20th minute. He started the move before finishing it off to score his 48th goal in 86 appearances for Egypt.

Malawi helped Egypt with the second goal when Omar Marmoush’s deflected shot through Charles Petro lobbed over the sprawling goalie – Charles Thom, to earn the crucial three points to go top of the group. Former Chiefs defender and captain Patrick Mabedi was on the bench as he is assistant coach for Malawi.
