TS Galaxy Queens midfielder Nompumelelo Nyandeni has been named the 2022 South African Football Journalists’ Association (SAFJA) Women’s Footballer of the Year at the Tsogo Sun Hotel in Hyde Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Nyandeni, who was a finalist last year, beat off competition from Boitumelo Rabale of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, University of Western Cape (UWC) duo Amogelang Motau and Lonathemba Mhlongo, and new teammate Busisiwe Ndimeni, who was formerly with Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).

The 35 year old was nominated for her exploits from the last year’s Hollywoodbets Super League, when she starred with JVW FC, helping them finish in fourth place.

Mbuzi, as Nyandeni is affectionately known, was the top goal scorer in the league last season with 30 goals.

Nyandeni, who has been capped 149 times for Banyana Banyana, earned a trip to Brentford in England, along with other winners from the season’s awards from last year.

Her SAFJA crown comes with a R15 000 cheque, while her fellow nominees got R2 000 each as consolation.
