The much-anticipated national shutdown, led by the EFF, began early on Monday with the goal of disrupting the country by protesting the electricity crisis and calling for President Cyril Ramaphosa to step down and the high level of unemployment to be addressed.
The first dramatic incident was an alleged attack on the home of Soweto parliament leader Nhlanhla “Lux” Dlamini, who accused the EFF of being behind it.

This morning, EFF members in Newlands, Durban, warned a fully operational Shoprite to shut down and follow the national shutdown protocol.
An EFF leader can be heard speaking through a speaker in a video advising Shoprite not to test them.
“Shoprite don’t test us. Do You want to see our test?” We are coming for you, management of Shoprite be warned,” the local leader yelled.

While in Newlands, Johannesburg police descended on the crowd to disperse it and arrest those who had begun roadblocking.

Videos of the scene have gone viral on Twitter, showing EFF members being attacked by unapologetic police officers tasked with maintaining the rule of law during the nationwide shutdown.
In one video, nearly ten police officers can be seen shoving one man to the ground, and as he struggles to stand up, an officer stamps on his head multiple times. Watch the video below:
