Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye couldn’t stop raving about young Amakhosi starlet Mduduzi Shabalala following Amakhosi’s progression to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup over the weekend.
The 19-year-old put in a Man of the Match performance as Chiefs defeated Motsepe Foundation Championship side, Casric FC 2-1.
Khanye wasn’t impressed with how Amakhosi played overall, but insisted Shabalala is coming up well, though he also insisted that he needs to remain humble
Khanye, whose own career off railed to soon, says the South African junior international is smart and should not be tempted to do things that will distract his progress.
“Kaizer Chiefs really found a diamond in him from their own development structure. Mdu must remain humble and not do things that some of us did. He should not let everything said about him go to his head and lose his way,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.
“He needs to stay humble, make smart decisions and sacrifice certain things in life, he will go far. Imagine in the team there aren’t creative players and he is playing with midfielders who can’t even pass.
“In the second half [against Casric] Caleb [Bimenyimana] did not want to run, there was a point he wanted to cut in, he was forced to make a run. If he had some awareness he would have read the situation.
“I wish Mdu played with us. I mean with some of the players we had, the boy would be very far. Even now, no one can deny he is talented. Remember I always tell you that you can tell the difference between a gifted and a taught player. That boy is gifted he is a diamond.
“At 19 years old he knows football which is why I’m saying he must remain humble and I beg him not to do the mistakes that some of us made.
“So Mdu has awareness, he has a vision, look at how he passes, how he traps, his first touch and the power in his feet. He is explosive. You look at his age and you imagine if Chiefs had three Mdus they would have good combinations.
“Because they don’t have that they were always hoping that the ball reaches Mdu for something to happen, especially in the second half. He is a Kaizer Chiefs player, what if he gets injured? You cannot burden the boy like that.”
