Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has sent a warning to his side after their rousing 5-2 win over CAF Champions League record winners Al Ahly.
Mokwena’s men hammered the 10-time winners 5-2 at a packed Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday.
First-half goals by Marcello Allende, Themba Zwane and rocket by Teboho Mokoena were followed by a second-half brace by Peter Shalulile, as Sundowns booked their ticket for the knockout stages with two group games to spare.
The win saw Downs regain the lead in Group B with 10 points, while Al Ahly are now under massive pressure and do not have it in their own hands to make it out of the group.
“Congratulations to the football club, congratulations to the football players, congratulations to the technical team and everyone involved,” he said.
“These type of victories are moments were don’t have to lose [focus], you still have to stay very, very focussed.
“It’s very dangerous, so you have to stay focussed. There is two more games in the group stages and a very long way in the Champions League still to go.”
Al Ahly, meanwhile, stayed on four points and have their qualification for the knockout stages not in their own hands. They need to beat second-placed Al Hilal, who have nine points from four matches, and hope that Masandawana will also beat Florent Ibenge’s side.
