ABC Motsepe League side Dondol Stars have secured an incredible financial boost after beating another DStv Premiership side in the Nedbank Cup.
The Gauteng third-tier league leaders surprised many by knocking out cup specialists and high-flying SuperSport United in the last-32 at Lucas Moripe Stadium last month.
However, it was a case of potentially underestimating their qualities as Gavin Hunt fielded a second-string side with Thamsanqa Gabuza as a make-shift center-back in the 2-1 defeat.
AmaZulu were not taking any risks but they were also found wanting with Dondol coming from behind after Pule Ekstein’s opener. Revaldo Fox netted the equaliser before the game went all the way to penalties, which Gabadinho Mhanho was the only one to miss in the 5-4 shootout result.
And the club are now R400,000 richer after joining Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter-final of the prestigious cup competition – which will be a massive boost the club looking to enter the professional ranks and win promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
