Orlando Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge team coach Joseph Makhanya has explained his side’s showboating that went viral on social media this past weekend.

The young Sea Robbers beat Sekhukhune United’s DDC team 3-0 over the weekend to move to the top of the reserve league log, but the major talking point of the game was the audacious showboating of Makhanya’s side when the game was 1-0.

Some fans love it, some hate it but the coach former iDiski TV analyst, who took over the job as Pirates’ DDC coach at the beginning of the season, defended it.

“Football is an expression,” he told SuperSport TV.

“If you are feeling confident about certain things, do them! At the end of the day, they get to the field of play, trying to enjoy themselves.

“If we want to put restrictions, then it’s something else. From my side, I was that kind of player, so I always encourage players to express themselves – as long as they feel confident.

“Because at the end of the day, this game needs some confidence. For you to get a bit of confidence sometimes you need to do certain things, so I understand them.

“As a player, we used to do certain things. Yes, somebody might see these things as disrespectful but we check the result it’s 3-0, so we tell them at some point we need to get a grip, we need to get our confidence.”

Duku Duku Makhanya was later again asked whether he encourages the showboating.

“It’s a form of an ice-breaker when you’re playing this game,” Makhanya added.

“It’s a form of an ice-breaker because the game becomes tense, so you find that maybe you’ve got nine players that are tense and somebody will break the ice so that everybody gets his confidence back.

“We get our confidence maybe in different situations or different types of doing things.

“They are a confident team, so if they are confident then I’m happy about that.”

What’s your take on the showboating? Is it part of the South African professional game?
