Benni McCarthy, who is receiving a lot of laurels for his outstanding work in England, has credited Erik Ten Hag for the turnaround at Manchester United.
The former Cape Town City and AmaZulu coach joined Ten Hag’s backroom staff ahead of the 2022/23 campaign to work as a Striker Coach.
McCarthy’s stint couldn’t have gone better so far, as United are still in the hunt for four trophies and the club’s attacking players are firing – most of all Marcus Rashford.
The England striker, who only scored five goals across all competitions last season, has netted a career high 24 goals this campaign already and we’re only in February.
His incredible form has been credited to working closely with McCarthy, with other players such as Jason Sancho also understood to have requested to work closer with the South African.
In a rare public appearance, McCarthy was now filmed during a chat with fans, where one supporter stated “thanks for what you’re doing with this team”.
However, McCarthy didn’t just want to take the credit for United’s superb campaign, saying: “Thank you, that’s the manager [Ten Hag], it’s the manager,” he responded in the exchange, as shared by @ManUnitedZone_.
The fan then responded with “it’s you as well,”, while another said “keep him [Rashford] scoring, Benni,” to which the Bafana Bafana all-time record goal scorer responded: “I’ve got him in the right place.”
United return to action on Thursday when they take on LaLiga leaders FC Barcelona in the second leg of their Europa League knockout stage tie – having picked up a 2-2 draw in the first leg at the Camp Nou.
