AmaZulu coach Romain Folz says he was determined to celebrate his new contract with a win, which wasn’t the case.
This after TS Galaxy stung Usuthu’s tails by defeating them 2-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night, in front of Duduzane Zuma, who graced the occasion at the 2010 World Cup semi-final venue.
This defeat came a day later after Usuthu management stunned many by confirming that Folz has been handed a new deal until the end of the 2025/26 season.
Folz joined Usuthu in October last year on the deal that was going to last until the end of this season.
But management have been impressed with Folz’s work so far, though the contract signing came as a surprise by handing him a three-year deal when they still had time to assess the situation at the end of the season.
The likes Manqoba Mnqqithi, who was heavily linked for the post, the Mamelodi Sundowns coach is now out of the race, for now.
“Yes, it was bittersweet,” reacted Folz when asked by iDiski Times about the loss after the game.
Folz then said: “But I don’t care about that. I said that before the game. But I’m not celebrating anything, I only celebrate wins.
“If I would have won this game, I would have celebrated it like any other win. But I think the content of the game was not bad.
“They had four shots in the entire game, one being a penalty. So, again, if you look at the sequences of how they scored, it was transition all the time.
“We lose the ball centrally and they have two passes going forward, they convert one through the penalty and the other cross that we defended poorly.
“It was based on our mistakes. If we score one-third of all the shots that we have or at least put them on target, it’s all our fault.

“To answer your question, I’m not happy with the results. We know what we have to work on and it is difficult to swallow, not because of anything, you can clearly see, we put ourselves in the situation to score but we cannot score.”
Following the loss to Galaxy, Usuthu dropped to ninth in the DStv Premiership standings with 24 points after 20 matches, with just five wins to show for their efforts this season, with two of those coming from Folz.
For Galaxy, the win propelled them to seventh in the table with 26 points after 21 matches, with the same number of wins as that of AmaZulu.
