Hunt Explains Gabuza CB Role

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has explained his surprise decision to play Thamsanqa Gabuza as centre-back in their Nedbank Cup last-32 encounter against Dondol Stars.

The four-time league winner surprised many with his starting line-up against Gauteng ABC Motsepe League side Dondol Stars, selecting striker Gabuza as a central defender.

He explained his decision ahead of the match, saying suspensions and injuries didn’t leave him much choice.

“Well, it was either him or me. So I thought he looks a little bit fitter than me,” Hunt told SuperSportTV.

“We’ve ran out of centre backs, we don’t have anybody we’ve got injuries and suspensions things like that.

“But it is what it is, we can’t complain. We got to try and find solutions, that’s my job. The solution is we worked with him in the last two to three days on the training ground.

“It is what it is, I’ve got faith that he’ll do a good job and I think he will do a good job. And he’s played there before.”

Matsatsantsa started the game well, with Siyabonga Nhlapo putting them in front going into the break with a led.

However, cracks started to show in the second stanza when Dondol Stars came out gun blazing and scored two goals to dump SuperSport out of the Nedbank Cup.
