On Wednesday morning, a 52-year-old man committed suicide in front of police officers and members of the public at Hillbrow Police Station.

He is said to have shot himself in the head. The man allegedly ran into the station in a panic, screaming that he was being followed.

He arrived alone, and it is unknown to whom he was referring. Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, a provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the incident.

He said incident occurred around 11:00 and the body has just been picked up by the mortuary van.

“The man entered the [police] station, like any other person who comes for a service at the station,” Masondo said.

He said the man told officers “there are people following me; I can see people following me”.

“Police couldn’t see anyone following him. When police were trying to assist him, he pulled out a firearm and shot himself,” Masondo explained.

SurgeZirc SA investigative journalist who is currently on scene has informed us that the man has been identified by his family as Mandla Xulu from Hillbrow who worked as a security guard in one of the stores around the area.
