Confusion Around Downs Sleeve Badge Cleared Up

Mamelodi Sundowns kit has caused some confusion among local football fans and the meaning has now been explained.

All DStv Premiership teams started are wearing shirts with new sleeve badges showing the league’s logo, however, Sundowns’ badge reads “DStv Premiership champions 2022/23”.

The wording has caused some confusion and led to some fans on social media questioning whether Masandawana were already crowned champions of the 2022/23 campaign.

Technically the thought is not too far-fetched, with Sundowns leading the log by an incredible 23 points after their record-breaking 15-match winning streak.

However, it has been confirmed to this publication that the badge was given to Sundowns in honour of their DStv Premiership title in 2021/22.

“The 2022/23 [badge] represents the season we are currently in. But maybe it should have been positioned [worded] differently to avoid confusion,” PSL Media Officer Fhatuwani Mpfuni told iDiski Times.

Sundowns will only return to league action on 4 March after switching their focus to CAF Champions League football, where they will face Al-Hilal, Coton Sport and Al Ahly.
