Hunt On Lepasa – Are You Joking With Me?

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has explained why his side loaned Zakhele Lepasa from Orlando Pirates on Deadline Day.

Lepasa’s arrival was confirmed on the last day of the January transfer window, with many being surprised that Pirates allowed him to move to Matsatsantsa – a direct rival in the race for CAF spots.

The 2019 Nedbank Cup winner spent most of his time on the sidelines at Pirates and managed to only make 14 appearances in all competitions after suffering from a serious injury scoring only one goal and assisting on one occasion.

Even though it came as a shock, Hunt explained the move and the reason of getting the Lepasa type of striker, as he has two similar strikers in Thamsanqa Gabuza and Bradley Grobler.

“If you look at our strike force and we’ve got very similar types of strikers. We needed something different. I’ve always felt we needed something different,”

“And he gives us something different. That’s pretty much how the move came about.

“Of course, I’m not involved in the actual deal. I can only say XYZ, we need something like this or something like that and I think he gives us that.

“It’s still only the start, so let’s see. I threw him straight in, people said I was mad, which I am but it’s but its the only way.

“It’s like you sign a player for R50 Million and they say ‘oh you have to coach him’. Are you joking with me? He must play.”

Lepasa might get another chance to impress his new coach when Hunt’s side take on Dondol Stars in the Nedbank Cup last-32 on Wednesday night.
