Stellenbosch came from two goals down to beat Cape Town City 3-2 in the Cape Derby at the Danie Craven Stadium on Friday night.

The win moves Stellies three positions up on the DStv Premiership table, to 12th. City remain seventh

It was the visitors who would strike early, as Lorenzo Gordinho, in just his third start for City, opened the scoring in the fifth minute.

Darren Keet was called into action in the 12th minute, saving well from Devin Titus, as the home team cheered on by their fans sought a way back into the game.

Stellies were creating a lot of chances, especially from the wide areas, and three minutes later Mervin Boji found himself one-on-one with Keet, but the City keeper made himself big to save what looked like a certain goal.

But despite creating a lot of chances, Stellies found themselves two down in the 42nd minute as Darwin Gonzalez finished off after a great assist by Juan Zapata.

A minute before half-time, Stellies were finally on the scoresheet as Devin Titus fired in from the edge of the area, with Keet stranded.

Stellenbosch were level in the 55th minute, and it was Titus again on the scoresheet, finishing from close range after Junior Mendieta’s attempt went across the face of the goal.

It was a passionate and hard-fought game, and the home team completed their comeback win when substitute Sinethemba Mngomezulu put them in front in the 84th minute, calmly finishing after being set up neatly by Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

An important win for Steve Barker’s team, and their first of 2023.
