Ex-Chipolopolo and Brighton Hove & Albion midfielder Enock Mwepu is said to be in a stable condition after suffering a health scare on Sunday in Lusaka.

Mwepu, 25 was admitted to the Lusaka Heart Hospital on January 14 after feeling unwell.

“He is better after not feeling well and decided to get checked,” a source familiar with the development told FARPost on Monday.

Mwepu’s English Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday released a statement confirming that the former Zambia captain was admitted to hospital.

The midfielder was forced to retire from football last October due to a congenital heart condition.

Mwepu is still employed by Brighton who appointed him academy coach this month where he is trainer with the clubs’ Under-9 team.

The midfielder is reportedly been in Zambia since the end of last week.

Mwepu’s congenital heart condition was detected four months ago by the Brighton medical team.

The discovery was made following tests conducted after Mwepu was taken ill in Bamako last September while on Chipolopolo duty where Zambia played hosts Mali in two friendlies.

Mwepu did not feature in both matches.

The midfielder won the 2016 COSAFA U20 Cup and 2017 U20 AFCON as hosts and was part of the Zambia team that reached the quarterfinals of the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea.

Mwepu moved to Europe in 2017 from Kafue Celtic where his first stop was Austrian champions RB Salzburg where he scored 16 goals in the five seasons he spent at the club.

He later moved to Brighton in the summer of 2021 for whom he has scored 2 league goals over the last two seasons.
