Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has insisted the shoeshine and piano style of play that was designed many years ago is back at the club.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ obvious show of crispiness, fluidity and suffocating teams at will, Mokwena has brought it back what was the club’s DNA since taking over the reigns.
On top of that, this Sundowns, who seemingly look to have no competition at the moment, are very clinical in front of the goals and persistently put pressure on teams from the off.
The decision to have Mokwena take over as sole head coach in October last year, in what was a shock move as rarely changes do happen at the club, seems now like a master stroke as he’s brought back a definitive style to Chloorkop – Sundowns, who had been winning games for long, are now doing it in style again.
At this moment, no one is matching them even without star striker Peter Shalulule, who had been their go to guy in winning the past two league trophies.
Richards Bay were the last asked to stop the juggernaut train on Friday, but they could not, with Sundowns winning 2-0 in the game they completely dominated in the rain soaked day in Durban.
“It’s DNA of the club, it’s culture of the club, Mamelodi Sundowns is about piano and shoeshine,” said Mokwena.
“It is the style of play that was designed and created many years ago by many legends and of course it is the quality of the players, if you know what I mean.
“You cannot speak a lot about how we play without mentioning how good our players are.”
With the way things are going, Sundowns, with this good squad, might win the league earlier than they have ever done before.
In the past two seasons, in the 2020/21 season they won it with three games to spare, while last time there were four games to spare, the earliest this has ever happened in the PSL era.
Sundowns, who have not conceded a goal under Mokwena to show how good they have been in five matches, are sitting pretty on top with 37 points after 15 matches, with only one defeat this season. They are 10 points ahead of second placed SuperSport United, who lost 2-1 to Golden Arrows on Saturday.

The Tshwane giants are next in action against Chippa United on Tuesday at Loftus Stadium, with the Chilli Boys having never defeated them in a league match in Pretoria since they first met in December 2012.
