Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has explained his controversial gesture after receiving the Golden Glove award at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The 30-year-old Argentina goalkeeper was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament following another stellar performance in the final.
While he couldn’t do much to prevent Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick, he denied Randal Kolo Muani a 4-3 extra-time winner in the 123rd with an outstanding save that will go into football history books.
He then continued his heroics in the shootout when he parried Kingsley Coman’s spot-kick.
However, Martinez was not done and dished out one more big talking point after picking up the Golden Glove award and then lower the trophy to his groin and push his hips towards it, while making a weird facial expression.
“I did it because the French were booing me,” the Aston Villa keeper told Argentinian radio station La Red, as cited by AS.
“Arrogance doesn’t work with me.”
It was Martinez’s second Golden Glove award at a major tournament after he already won the same trophy at the Copa America, when he guided Argentina to their first international trophy in 26 years.
