South African referee Victor Gomes has earned around R1.43 million from his time during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
According to Spanish publication AS, match officials received a basic fee of $70,000 from FIFA for their participation at football’s biggest showpiece.
In addition, each match day referee also gets another $3,000 per game in the group stages, while that amount rises to $10,000 in the knockout stages.
Meanwhile, assistant referees such as Zakhele Siwela will receive $25,000 basic pay and $2,500 for a group stage match – as much as fourth officials are getting.

Victor Gomes’ World Cup has ended after he was among several match officials who were released by FIFA.
Finally, VAR referees earned $3,000 for a group stage match and $5,000 in the latter stages of the tournament.
After adding up those amounts for Gomes, he will have received a total of around $81,000, eating to R1.4 million.
The South African referee would have earned $70,000 (R1.24 million) in basic pay, plus $3,000 (R53,000) times two for his two group stage games between France vs Australia as well as Spain vs Japan.
In addition Gomes earned another $5,000 (R88,300) for being the fourth official in the Netherlands vs Argentina quarter-final.
It’s a nice windfall for the South African referee, who is said to be retiring from local football after his return from Qatar.
