Some Mamelodi Sundowns fans have wondered why the Tshwane giants are always paired alongside Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League draw.
CAF conducted the draw on Monday, putting Sundowns in Group B comprising Al Ahly (Egypt), Al Ahli (Sudan) and Coton Sport (Cameroon.
Sundowns were in the same group with all the opponents save for Coton Sport in the last edition. Petro de Luanda eliminated Sundowns from the quarterfinal stage of the last edition.
SUNDOWNS POSE QUESTION TO SUPPORTERS
Sundowns have posed a question to their supporters asking them their opinion on what they felt about the draw.
“The Brazilians have been drawn against Al Ahly SC, Al Hilal 🇸🇩 & Coton Sport in the group stages of the #TotalEnergiesCAFCL! What are your first impressions of our group Masandawana?” Sundowns said on their Facebook page
In reaction, Tafadzwa Mutombeni wondered why the DStv Premiership champions are always drawn with Al Ahly.
“Al Ahly again but this is Sundowns, we are going to beat them home and away like we did last time,” he said.
Keletso Dion Marapyane said it was now becoming a norm that Sundowns are paired alongside the former Champions League winners.
“We must make peace with the fact that each and every season we’ll play Al Ahly in either in the group stages or along the competition…but I trust Mamelodi Sundowns to top the group and go all the way to win the CAF Champions League,” he said.
SOME FANS WELCOME FAMILIAR OPPONENTS
Thokozani Ashan has since welcomed the draw saying Sundowns are familiar with most of the opponents.
“Good draw because these are the familiar teams that we played so many times with. Good luck Masandawana,” he said.
Katleho Kumalo has since challenged Sundowns players to approach this year’s edition seriously.
“Our players must take this competition seriously from the onset. No team is weaker. They should be committed until the final hurdles,” Kumalo said.
Top fan Sihle Dlamini could not agree more with those who feel the group is very tough.
“A very tough group indeed, but these tough encounters can only make us better. Only a few years ago, we could never hope to even get a draw from these North African teams, but now we play on mutual respect. I believe we’ll top the group,” he said.
Sundowns stunned Al Ahly 1-0 in Cairo in what was their first ever away win against the 10-time champions.
The games see Al Ahly’s South African forward Percy Tau playing against his former team Sundowns again.
