Ngubane On Coaching Circus In The PSL – Everyone Is Now A Coach

Former Maritzburg United and Black Leopards coach Mlungisi “Professor” Ngubane says the coaching industry in the PSL has become a mockery.

Ngubane says everyone just rocks up from administration and the next day they are coaches.

He said the PSL should follow the template of England where if you don’t have a UEFA Pro licence, the highest qualification in world football, you can’t coach in the EPL and also in the Championship.

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach, Ernst Middendorp, also told this publication that in Germany, where he was born, you can’t coach in the Bundesliga if you don’t have a UEFA Pro licence.

Morgan Mammila’s elevation at Chippa United has raised questions over the standard of coaching in the PSL, as he was handed a Chippa post in September without the required licence to coach. Mammila, who is the club’s administrator, has claimed to have CAF D licence.

This led Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena to say that coaching industry in the PSL “was on life support” and the media is failing to publicly speak about it, though he was not mentioning any specific names – and “Professor” has now also criticised the situation.

“In South Africa, everyone is coaching,” Ngubane told the iDiski Times.

“Some people are coaching without qualification. There has to be a licence that everyone must have to coach in the Premier Division and also in the First Division (Motsepe Foundation Championship).

“In South Africa everyone is just a coach. A person sleeps today as a player and tomorrow he’s a coach. A person sleeps today as a general manager and tomorrow he is a coach – I mean that is killing our football.”

He said this hampers the players in getting the right coaching information and this has directly impacted the national team’s progress and that’s why Bafana did not qualify for the World Cup.

Another thorn issue that Ngubane also spoke about was that the PSL should introduce the Financial Fair Play, to help clubs not to overspend.

In Europe, the Financial Fair Play’s (FFP) main objective, after it was introduced, was to prevent clubs from spending more than they earn in revenues. It also aims to prevent clubs from getting into financial trouble.

Because there is no implementation of FFP, a few clubs in the PSL are struggling to pay salaries.

iDiski Times has also learnt that former Swallows coach Brandon Truter has opened a case with PSL DRC in the effort to get what is his after he was forced out of the club last year to resign without the settlement.

Zambian international Austin Muwowo recently told this publication that it was a nightmare to be at Swallows as he went for months without getting paid.

“We have to implement it because there are a lot of shenanigans,” said Ngubane.

“My view is – if a player is not a national team player, he should earn below R100,000. If he is the national team player, then that is the bonus to earn R200, 000.”
