Netherlands Down USA For Quarter-Final Spot

The Netherlands beat the United States of America 3-1 in their 2022 FIFA World Cup last-16 tie at the Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday.

The Dutch started the brighter of the two sides, but it was the USA who had the best chance when Christian Pulisic ran clean through in on goal.

However, his tame effort was saved by the legs of Andries Noppert and have the Dutch the reprieve they needed to compose themselves again.

And it wasn’t long before they opened the scoring when Memphis Depay found himself unmarked in the area to slot home a low Denzel Dumfries cross.

The Internazionale wing-back turned provider once more just before the break when he teed up Daley Blind as the Oranje held a two-goal lead at the break.

USA showed some glimpses of quality through Pulisic and Timothy Weah, while Haji Wright missed a gilt-edged chance early in the second half.

While he made up for the miss by scoring 15 minutes from time, Louis van Gaal’s side wasted no time to restore the two-goal advantage as Dumfries got in on the action.

The victory will see them meet Australia or Argentina in the quarter-finals of the global showpiece.
