Song Breaks Silence On Onana Decision

Cameroon head coach Rigobert Song has explained the situation around star goalkeeper Andre Onana.

News filtered that the Internazionale goalkeeper had been expelled from the squad due to disciplinary reasons hours before their 3-3 draw with Serbia this afternoon.

The result means the Indomitable Lions need to beat Brazil in their final Group G game later this week.

However, the absence of Onana was a major talking-point and Song feels it could have been the trigger for their inspired display against the tournament dark horses.

“Andre has now been left out for disciplinary reasons. I think we needed to make that decision. It was something that had to happen and maybe it was the trigger we needed for this performance,” he said, as per The Mirror.

“In a squad, you need to see discipline and if you can’t fit in with that discipline, with what’s required to be part of a squad, then you need to accept responsibility for that.”

It’s been suggested there was a major disagreement about his eccentric sweeper keeper role and the technical team wanted something more ‘traditional’ and ‘pragmatic’ in their approach in their upcoming games.

“We don’t question his ability – he plays for one of the top teams in Europe – but you need to ensure the team takes precedence over the individual,” he added.

“At the moment I’ve asked him to wait and we will see if he is going to stay with us. It’s up to him. The squad is more important than the interests of the individual.”
