Former Ballon d’Or Winner Visits SuperSport

Former Ballon d’Or winner Michael Owen took his time off to visit SuperSport United at their training ground on Thursday.
The 41-year-old is in the country for the 2022 FIFA World Cup as a pundit for SuperSport TV and on Thursday he visited SSU’s training.
He was also seen speaking to club CEO Stan Matthews, and spoke to the club academy players to give words of wisdom and what it takes to succeed at the highest level.
The pictures were shared by SuperSport on twitter account, with Owen witnessing the club’s training session alongside coach Gavin Hunt. He was handed the jersey number 10, the number he wore with the England national team.
Owen became England’s youngest international player and youngest goal scorer at the same time in 1998.
He lit up the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, scoring one of the all-time great goals by running from his own half to score against Argentina in the round of 16.
However, England under coach Glen Hoddle then, lost 4-3 on penalties (2-2 after extra time) after David Beckham was sent off.
Owen won the Ballon d’Or in 2001 after helping Liverpool win the UEFA Europa League and Carling Cup and the FA Cup.
He also claimed two English Premier League golden boot awards – in 1997/98 and 1998/ 99 seasons with Liverpool. He also played for Real Madrid, Manchester United and Newcastle United.
He was part of the England side that beat Bafana 2-1 in the annual Nelson Mandela Challenge at Kings Park Stadium in Durban in 2003, with goals scored by Gareth Southgate and Emile Heskey. Heskey cancelled out the equalising penalty of Benni McCarthy.
